Motivational Interviewing (MI) is "a particular way of talking with people about change and growth to strengthen their own motivation and commitment." Motivational Interviewing Fourth Edition: Helping People Change and Grow. This training is updated to include the new information from the Fourth Edition of MI.
We will cover the Spirit of MI, the four tasks and the microskills associated with MI. The schedule includes presentations, demonstrations, videos and practice.
Generally speaking, most aspects of Motivational Interviewing, both beginning and intermediate, can be covered in a two day training. Gary has gotten approval from the Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Board in Ohio for (12 CEUs) for the two day training. Additional coaching and feedback are usually needed to achieve competency.
Gary is starting an ongoing coaching group for those who have had an initial two day training or other previous training and want more coaching and feedback. Group will remain small to provide more than adequate time for specific practice helping lead towards competency. Individual coaching is available as well. Gary's approach involves modeling the spirit of motivational interviewing and demonstrating the specific interventions all the while setting the stage for participants to feel safe while they do skills practice .
Included in this section is feedback from the Director of Programming for a large, statewide social service organization after the program has had multiple trainings in MI from Gary:
"Gary shows such genuine enthusiasm for using MI and for teaching others MI. The investment he makes in helping others to learn MI shows his dedication to helping professionals ensure they are communicating with others with the dignity and respect that every human deserves. He is a blessing to have as a trainer for teams. He is an amazing trainer and keeps his trainings fun and interactive, while at the same time reminding us why we wanted to be in a helping profession. I would recommend Gary as a trainer for any organization or group."
